INTRODUCTION
Volvo’s most affordable SUV so far in the country, XC40, broke covers earlier in July 2018 with a single R-Design variant. Unmistakably Volvo, the new XC40 is designed in tandem with other models from the Scandavaian car giant and has been crafted to offer an opulent experience to the occupants. Under the hood, the 2018 Volvo XC40 gets a 2.0-litre engine paired to an auto box. A well-rounded package, the new Volvo XC40 price in India is competitive, which poses it well against the rivals in the segment.
EXTERIOR
Launched in a single variant initially, the Volvo XC40 received two more grades, and can be had in R-Design, Momentum and Inscription trims. The plush Volvo XC40 exterior gets a mesh grille finished in black with a hint of chrome on the Volvo logo.
Headlamps at each end feature Thor’s hammer LED daytime running lights. The black roof with blackened A-pillars is offered across all colour options.
INTERIOR
Ford EcoSport interior match the exterior in every respect. The vehicle is a tall one. The designing of the cabin makes it look more spacious than it is. In spite of the high ground clearance, the car provides adequate headroom for occupants.
One of the salient features of Ford EcoSport interior in the top-end models is the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Ford’s latest SYNC 3 system features both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The lower-end models get a similar system, but with a smaller touchscreen measuring 6.5 inches.
You can experience the difference as you enter the Ford EcoSport. Plush seats with high-quality fabric beckon you to have a seat. The height of the cabin is such that you get enough headroom. The driver seat presents an ideal view of the road ahead. A fantastic dashboard with both analogue and digital indicators greets the driver. Adjustable headrests for all rows add to the overall comfort. Infotainment system is compatible with Bluetooth and has adequate connectivity options, like Aux-In and USB. The driver gets immediate reminders like engine malfunction, headlight alert, low fuel warning, fasten seatbelt warning, and key off alerts. Different indicators like fuel gauge and distance to fuel empty status are welcome additions. Ford EcoSport does not have a big boot, but it is adequate to store your luggage when you go on long trips
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
All three variants in the XC40 line-up derive power from the same diesel engine. The engine is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder D4 unit, which emanates maximum power of 187bhp against 400Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are carried out by an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Powered by the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder D4 oil burner, which comes paired to an 8-speed automatic unit, the Volvo XC40 mileage is claimed to be around 18km/l.
The 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine is a capable unit which promises good driveability. Handling is another parameter where the baby Volvo SUV gets a thumbs-up. Overall, the SUV scores well when it comes to performance.
BRAKING AND SAFETY
The most affordable and smallest SUV from Volvo India comes well equipped with safety and security features. It gets lane-keeping assist, blind spot warning, pilot assist, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, eight standard airbags, traction control, hill-descent control and ESP, among others. Interestingly, the SUV recently received a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test with 97 % in adult occupant protection.
CONCLUSION
The new Volvo XC40 is not just visually appealing, but also has been crafted to offer sheer luxury that is expected from a Volvo car. While it is the smallest and most affordable SUVs by Volvo India, it comes well equipped with comfort, safety and connectivity features.

Stand Out Features
Need Improvement
When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.
A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.
In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
