INTRODUCTION
Volkswagen Tiguan has made the Indian enthusiasts wait for too long, before it was finally launched in the country. Although, the German automaker gave a glimpse of the SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo in February, but the launch was uncertain till mid 2016. It was during the festive season last year that Volkswagen made its intentions clear that it is foraying into the full-size SUV segment with the Tiguan. The Tiguan is presented only in diesel fuel trim in a couple of grades: Comfortline and Highline. The exterior styling of the India-spec model is a bit different from the European counterpart, while the features on offer have also been reduced as compared to the Europe-spec model. Still, the Tiguan SUV comes with a lot of bells and whistles, whether it is comfort and convenience, or the safety compartment. Being based on the MQB platform, the SUV is being locally manufactured at the company’s Aurangabad production facility. Surprisingly, Volkswagen Tiguan packs the 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel-drive system as it was believed to be missing in the media reports prior to the launch.

Surprisingly, Volkswagen Tiguan packs the 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel-drive system as it was believed to be missing in the media reports prior to the launch.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged TDI diesel engine which belts out top power of 140bhp at 4000rpm and peak torque of 340Nm between 1750-2750rpm. It is coupled with a 7-speed Dual Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic transmission, which transmits the power to all the four wheels en-route the 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel drive system with variable torque transfer to the rear wheels.
The Volkswagen Tiguan delivers an ARAI Specified mileage of 17.06kmpl. However, it may differ in the real world driving, depending upon the road condition and driving style. It could return somewhere in vicinity of 13-15kmpl.
Volkswagen Tiguan comes with McPherson strut with lower transverse link and stabilizer bar at the front suspension and Multi Link at the rear suspension. Due to being based on the MQB architecture, the SUV is lighter by around 60 kgs. The 2.0L engine is a true performer and with the DSG gearbox, Tiguan is quite a delight. The gearbox responds instantly to the inputs and it is a sheer pleasure to be behind the wheel.
BRAKING AND SAFETY
Volkswagen Tiguan gets disc brakes at the front as well as rear. In addition, Volkswagen has offered a plethora of premium safety fitments as standard with the SUV in form of Pedestrian protection reactive hood, 6-airbags, Hill descent control, Driver alert system, Reverse parking camera, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with driver steering recommendation, ABS, ASR, EDL, EDTC, ISOFIX child seat mounting points on rear seat, 3-Point seatbelts with pre-tensioner for all seats, Safety optimized front head restraints with height and longitudinal adjustment and Tyre pressure monitoring system.
CONCLUSION
Volkswagen Tiguan turns out to be a stellar product with the belligerent pricing and incredible performance. It packs way more features than all of its contemporaries together, while the mileage is also pretty decent. It looks the most complete SUV in the segment and at least, should be given a try before going to purchase the heavyweights like Fortuner, Endeavour and Pajero Sport.

Need Improvement
When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.
A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.
In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
