The Fortuner has got a much needed makeover along with some changes to the interior as well as other internals. At 4705mm in length, 1840mm in width and 1850mm in height, the Toyota Fortuner is a what you call massive. It might be smaller than the Ford Endeavour and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, but at the same time, it is much wider than both the rivals giving it that unmistable road presence it carries. It has a huge ground clearance of 220mm making you feel the king of the road. The looks of the Toyota Fortuner have been improved in almost every way possible. It somewhat gets a Land Cruiser-ish front end which makes it look a segment above.

The looks of the Toyota Fortuner have been improved in almost every way possible. It somewhat gets a Land Cruiser-ish front end which makes it look a segment above.

The HID headlamps protrude nicely and the chrome on the hood scoop and grille give it the bling. The front bumper gets a bigger air-dam for better engine cooling. Seen side on, you notice the slight change made to the wheel arches and also the new multi-spoke alloy wheels. The side steps are also changed and now are of the ribbed variety. The rear gets clear lens type tail-lamps as well as an integrated reverse camera. In all, these changes go a long way in making the huge SUV modern and amazing to look at. The car is also available in two new colors – shade of silver and gold.

The changes to the Fortuner include the interior being re-furnished too. The sporty pedals look amazing while the steering wheel is new and feels chunky to hold. It houses buttons for various functions such as the audio system, Bluetooth and multi-information display. The faux wood finish on the steering makes the ambience in the interior a lot more plush. It has been generously applied to the power window switches and around the two central air-con vents and makes the whole interior smell of class.

The new instrumentation cluster is finished with a blue back-drop and looks amazing at night! The central console features the new touch screen double-DIN head unit that also has DVD player and USB / Bluetooth connectivity. It is also the display for the reverse camera. The 6-way electrically adjustable seat helps one find the best driving position. The seats are supportive and comfortable and the list of creature comforts makes sure you are pampered well.

Toyota India has phased out the 3.0L D-4D diesel engine and introduced the all-new 2.8L GD diesel motor in the new Fortuner SUV. It is the same engine that made its debut with the Innova Crysta. It develops a maximum power of 174bhp and peak torque of 450Nm, while linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It is also available with a new 6-speed manual transmission. And, for the first time ever in the Indian market, Toyota has introduced the 2016 Fortuner with a gasoline power-plant, borrowed from the Innova Crysta.

Whereas the 2.8L GD oil-burner diesel engine churns out 177Ps of power and 360Nm of torque, and comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The mileage offered is 14.29kmpl.
The ride is also smooth due to the double wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer in front and 4-link with coil spring and lateral road at the rear. As far as braking in concerned, there ventilated disc-brakes in front and drum brakes for the rear.

The Toyota Fortuner features ventilated disc brakes in the front and drum brakes at the rear. The car has Anti-Brake Locking System, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist making it stop in the least possible distance. The 12 spoke alloy wheels wear 265/65 R17 tubeless radials which are very wide and provide ample grip on all surfaces. The car has dual SRS airbags for the front passenger and driver, however, one expects more safety tech in a car of this segment.

Performance and Handling

The Fortuner is available in three variants with the same engine and two transmission options. Start the car and first thing you notice is the diesel clatter even at idle rpm. The D-4D engine is not a smooth operator, however, the Fortuner’s Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels are well under control.
Slot the gear and press on the throttle and the car lunges forward. On the move, the SUV feels very eager to perform and break into three digit speeds. Torque is well spread and the peak torque starts from as low as 1400rpm giving the Fortuner excellent drive-ability around town. It’s an effortless car if you want to amble about.
Not to mention that the Fortuner also features the cruise control function in the AT variant, a must have for those long highway trips! So what’s the USP of having an SUV in India. Well, the fact of the matter remains that roads in India can be easily considered to be off-road haven for some in the western world, and to deal with them on a daily basis you need a proper SUV with high ground clearance and a comfortable ride. It’s the very ability of such SUVs to make speed without having to brake for pot-holes, bumps and undulations and still remaining calm and composed on the inside that makes SUVs such a requirement for Indians and Indian conditions. It’s actually like taking your drawing room on a drive and with the same level of comfort! However, the biggest issue by far in the Toyota Fortuner and for long has been the ride quality on low speeds, especially on bumpy or bad roads. But there is a way around the problem. Just don’t drive slow! The car begs to be driven fast and trust us when we say that the suspensions and huge alloys wrapped in 265mm wide rubber can take most of the abuse you can ever throw at it. The Fortuner handles well for such a heavy car with such a high centre of gravity. The steering effort isn’t really very light though at the same time, it didn’t give us a chance to complain much.

The safety features include, improved suspension with pitch and bounce controls, ABS with EBD, 7 SRS airbags, hill-start assist control, vehicle stability control, and the GOA body structure which is rigid and absorbs the impacts to quite an extent.

The Toyota Fortuner is one big burly SUV which reinstates what SUVs should be like. It is big, wide, heavy and macho and that is what manufacturers should think about while making SUVs. It has enough grunt to tackle any terrain and coupled with the 4×4 system, the car is almost unstoppable. We simply love this menacing bully of a car, and it has bowled us over with its charm.

Things to keep in mind before Buying Toyota Fortuner

When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.

A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.

In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
