INTRODUCTION
The Tata Tiago is the latest entry level mid-range compact hatchback by Tata Motors which competes with Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Hyundai Grand i10 and Honda Brio.
Tata has introduced a new, innovative & fresh design language with cutting edge driving dynamics in their latest hatchback.
The design of the front is now sleeker and the humanity line which is finished in chrome now continues in the headlights too. The front bumpers, sculpted hood and the piano black grille are all new for the Tiago. The Tata Tiago exteriors have body-coloured bumpers, body-coloured ORVMs which are electrically adjustable and comes with an auto-fold function. On the upper trim, you get the turn indicator on the ORVM and it is also finished in piano black. Tata also offers 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels with a contrasting roof to enhance the side profile of the Tiago. The rear profile features boomerang-shaped tail lamps, an integrated spoiler with spats and high-mount stop lamp, enhancing the visibility of the car for the following vehicle users.
Tata Tiago interior has been refreshed and now comes with new features. The interior has been given a dual-tone treatment to liven up the cabin while it gets full fabric seats and a premium knitted roof liner on the upper variants. Premium touches include the piano black finish on steering wheel, infotainment surrounds and chrome finish around air vents. Tata also now offers fully automatic climate control and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay. The infotainment system is connected to 4 speakers and 4 tweeters that are provided by Harman. The steering-mounted audio and phone control buttons deliver excellent quality of comfort and entertainment on the go. The versatility of interiors is improvised with a spacious cooled glove box, and bottle and cup holders in the front console, and boot space with 242 litres of volume can accommodate two average size travel bags for a weekend trip. Tata now offers a digital instrument cluster, which shows a gear shift display, average fuel economy, distance to empty and much more. All of this information is important for the driver and the cluster will also give a reminder, if the driver forgets the car keys inside the cabin.
Tata Tiago comes with two drive modes, namely Eco and City. The eco mode feels a bit sluggish if you want to overtake. But on the other hand, the City mode feels quite peppy and enjoyable for daily use. The small size of the hatchback is an advantage and due to which it zips through traffic. The suspension of the Tiago absorbs most of the potholes that are present on our Indian roads. The suspension system with McPherson struts with coil spring at the front and semi-independent suspension system with dual path strut at the rear deliver excellent comfort for the occupants.
The Tiago is engineered to give you a power-packed performance under all conditions. The powerful Revotron 1.2L (petrol) engine delivers a power and torque of 85 PS and 114 Nm at 3500 RPM. The contemporary 3-cylinder engine comes with two different driving modes – Eco & City; giving you the power of two engines in one! And the Revotorq 1.3L (diesel) engine delivers optimum power of 70 PS with the highest torque in the segment – 140 Nm at 3000 RPM, delivering an exceptional driving experience. The Tiago is equipped with an advanced dual path suspension that improves its handling and delivers a comfortable and smooth driving experience. The Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system in the Tiago eases your efforts in negotiating tight spots and enables you to maintain control at all times. The Tata Tiago is also equipped with a gear shift recommendation feature that enables you to experience a smooth and efficient drive.
The Tiago comes loaded with advanced safety features that empower you to drive confidently. It is equipped with dual front air bags, advanced ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control, and rear parking sensors. The infotainment system?s display even offer’s a visual image off the car’s proximity to any object. The body structure of the Tiago is very strong and can absorb impact energy, thus offering superior safety.
As far as comfort and convenience is concerned, the Tiago offers unparalleled comfort with 22 intelligently designed utility spaces that take care of all your needs, height adjustable driver’s seat, the scooped out front seats provide more leg room, thus maximizing comfort and the Multi-information Display instrument cluster offers access to a host of useful information about the Tiago. It also empowers you to control a variety of in-car features.
The Tiago features an advanced ConnectNeXT Infotainment system by HARMAN. The Tiago enables you to experience Immersive Surround-sound music with 8 speakers. It also features a first-in-segment smartphone based Turn-by-Turn navigation app (available only to Android users.)
But the NVH is poorly built, rear headroom is tight and Tata’s service quality is also not up to the mark.
The Tiago is an excellent option for car buyers in the “compact hatchback” segment.
It is the combination of Good Looks, Quality Interiors and a Respectable Ride and Handling.
The Tiago competes with Maruti Celerio, Hyundai Grand i10 and Honda Brio in the compact hatchback segment. The Tiago overtakes the Brio and the Grand i10 with ease but is still in close competition with the Celerio.

Need Improvement
When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.
A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.
In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
