INTRODUCTION
Tata has finally revealed the EV version of their one of the best selling compact SUVs in India. Tata has been known for its build quality since they started manufacturing vehicles in India. Tata Nexon was the made in India car that scored a rating of 5-star rating in adult safety when tested by Global NCAP. Tata has been developing their EV technology and it’s named as Ziptron. The battery of the SUV is IP67 certified and is liquid-cooled so that the battery does not heat up. According to Tata, the battery pack is dustproof, shockproof, all-weather and waterproof. The regular charging time for the battery is around 8 hours however, through the fast charger you can charge the battery from 0%-80% in just 60 minutes. Tata Nexon EV will be available in three variants namely XM, XZ+ and top of the line XZ+ LUX. Tata Nexon EV price is expected to be around Rs. 14-15 lakh.
Tata Nexon EV exteriors will feature a similar design to the 2020 Nexon and comes with black cladding all around for a rugged look. The grille has been removed and the air dam is given a mesh effect with blue accents. The front gets slim headlamp cluster with projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and fog lamps with cornering ability. The headlamps also come with tunnel detection and “follow me home” function. There is also automatic rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. From the side profile, you would be able to see the blue accents, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and a contrasting dual-tone roof. The charging port is at the place of the regular fuel filler. At the rear, there are clear lens taillights, blue accents and an electric tailgate.
Tata Nexon EV interior has been updated and comes with off-white interior with blue accents all over the dashboard, centre console and some other areas. There is off-white leatherette upholstery with a centre armrest in the front. The gear stick has been replaced with a rotary dial that has three options Neutral, Drive, Sport and Reverse. The fully automatic climate control sits below the 7″ touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The driver gets keyless entry and push-button start, multi-information display that shows vital information to the driver, multi-function leather steering wheel and a wearable key that can unlock the SUV so that you do not have to carry your keys with you. The instrument cluster is part digital and part analogue. The speedometer is analogue while the rest of the gauge cluster is digital. Tata also offers connected car features through ZConnect app that offers various features like remote commands, locating nearest charging stations, car diagnostics and vehicle tracking.
Tata Nexon EV specs come with a 30.2 kWh li-ion battery that produces a max power output of 129 PS and a peak torque of 245 Nm. The front wheels are driven by the electric motor that is powered by the battery.
As the Nexon EV is not yet launched we cannot comment on the performance and handling.
Braking duties are handled by disc brakes in the front and drum brakes at the rear. Safety is taken care of by Antilock braking system with Electronic brake distribution and Cornering Stability Control. The structure of the body has been formed by reinforced steel which complies with the latest full-frontal, side-impact and offset impact crash regulations. There are also dual airbags in the front for the driver and the co-driver while the rear seats get ISOFIX anchor points for mounting the child seats. There is a rear camera with rear parking sensors to safely and easily park the car.
Tata Nexon EV range is rated at around 300 km according to Tata.
Blue highlights, similar to the ones outside, lend freshness to the dashboard design, which remains largely unchanged from the pre-facelift Nexon. The instrument cluster now is part-digital, with a coloured display that gives out information like state of charge, projected battery range, as well as a moving graph displaying power usage versus regeneration. The steering is new, and so is the rotary ‘gear’ selector. The latter, however, isn’t the most convenient to use as it is slow to respond and illegible in direct sunlight. This means you have to look up into the instrument panel to see which mode you are in; not nice. The new placement of the gear selector knob allows for a large storage cavity in front of it.
Tata Nexon–EV review: The e-Nexon has a peak power output of 127 bhp compared to 109 bhp of the diesel and petrol versions. … The car is not only significantly different and better than those but is also in some ways a true reference point for other EVs that are sure to follow. But that is to be expected
CONCLUSION
As of now, there are no direct competitors to the Nexon EV as there is only one electric SUV present in the market and that is Hyundai Kona Electric which comes in the premium segment.

Need Improvement
When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.
A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.
In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
