INTRODUCTION
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is one of the few cars from the Indo-Japanese automaker that went about its business in a subtle way and hasn’t been an outright sales sensation. The S-Cross is the first ever Maruti car to be sold through the Nexa outlet.
With the new Maruti S-Cross facelift, the company has just managed to retain the design language that the car has been known for, stylish and graceful. Not just stylish, the car has been brawn and that is evident in what we see under the hood, a popular 1.3-litre DDiS engine that has scripted many success stories of Maruti cars thus far. However, the car is available in only one engine trim across all the variants. The Maruti S-Cross 2017 has a good list of features on offer, including automatic climate control rear parking sensors and camera. The car gets disc brakes and ABS (anti-lock braking system) as a standard feature across all the variants to go with the two safety airbags, which is a good news for the people who want to buy this car.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross boasts on a perfect combination of aggression and sophistication. The body is extremely soft in design but holds minor aggressive traits like black-cladded lower skirts and skid plates on the lip spoiler, which add a lot of spice to the story. The front grille too gets bold vertical slats that are polished in chrome. Besides, the front fascia gets projector headlamps and LED DRLs, while the rear gets LED tail lights. The car rides on 16-inch alloy wheels for all the trim levels and is suspended over Mcpherson Strut front coil and Torsion Beam rear coil.
The Maruti S-Cross interior styling and setting is just as attractive as any Maruti car that is retailed through the Nexa premium dealership. The top trim gets leather upholstery while in the lower trims, the seats are covered with good quality fabric. The front dashboard is utmost attractive and gets a touchscreen infotainment system that is given all the connectivity options like Apple’s CarPlay, Google’s Android Auto and MirrorLink. Automatic climate control is added to the top two trims while lower
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is offered with just one engine trim, similar to the Vitara Brezza. The 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine is what you get across all the trim levels and can produce a maximum power output of 89 bhp at 4,000 revs per minute against a highest torque of 200 Nm at 1,750 revs per minute. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, which is the transmission option in the car.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross gets a good number of safety features as a standard fitment across all the variants. The stopping duties are done by ventilated disc brakes for the front wheel and solid discs for the rear. ABS is offered as standard even in the base model. And as for the safety, child safety lock, crash sensor and seat belt warning are given as standard in all the trims. However, the anti-theft alarm is given a miss in the base variant.
Based on the Maruti S-Cross specifications, one can easily say that the car has a good performance. The 1.3-litre DDiS is the company’s go-to engine and has a very refined performance delivery. The engine is frugal and will allow you to cruise at top speeds at much lesser engine noise. The gear transmission is smooth and light, while the acceleration is very responsive at every gear halt. When at the top gear, the car can easily rock a top speed of 150 kmph and can overtake many cars while on the expressway.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is only offered in a diesel trim with no manual transmission on offer. Hence, the buyers get two reasons that make the car so economical. Despite being a full-sized SUV crossover, it offers an ARAI certified mileage of 23.65 kmpl. On the road, the car offers anywhere around 20 kmpl economy, which is quite phenomenal for a car of this caliber.
Good out look, driving comfort much better than other cross overs. But, felt little bit expensive without automatic transmission. One of the best buy in smart hybrid worth to spend and way to go with Maruti no worries about after sales service, spare parts and resale value.
Inside the car though, things are different from the exterior and the cabin feels plush and sporty. The black interior theme is well-supported by leather seats. The front seats themselves are well-contoured and offer excellent back, under-thigh and side support. The rear seats too are comfortable and offer good under-thigh support and shoulder support. Leg room too is generous at the rear and two tall occupants can comfortably sit behind each other. Being a crossover, the S-Cross is pretty tall and with just a slightly tapering roofline, headroom is quite good for all occupants. The transmission tunnel in the second row is not too tall and coupled to a wide seat, a fifth passenger too can sit with a decent amount of comfort
In terms of material and build quality too the S-Cross scores well as almost everything in the dashboard and door panels seem to be put together. The dashboard with its soft touch material and the rearview mirror with auto-dimming further add to the premium quotient of the cabin. However, there are a few bits such as the exterior casing of the rearview mirror and the plastic quality of the smaller door pockets that seems a bit off the quality levels of the rest of the cabin.
The Maruti S-Cross reviews are mostly positive. It is undoubtedly one of the best cars in the segment. You might feel a little inferior in terms of power, but the engine refinement does the job for you. Plus, the designing is unmistakably attractive and bold. After all, there aren’t many cars on the block to get vertical chrome-dipped front grille. And unlike some of the affordable cars from the company, the S-Cross is richly fed with a good range of safety additional and the disc brakes on all the four wheels and ABS as standard will prove the point. Even, the crash sensor has not been missed in any of the trims.
However, the Maruti S-Cross on-road price takes it closer to the league of the Hyundai Creta, which tends to divert the customers to the Hyundai car. And thus, this is the reason why we don’t see as many S-Cross as the Cretas and the Dusters

Need Improvement
When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.
A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.
In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
