Maruti Suzuki unveiled their first Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the Ertiga at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo. The Ertiga is inspired by the RIII concept of Maruti Suzuki and is based on Swift’s platform.
The Ertiga competes with Toyota Innova, Renault Lodgy and Honda Mobilio with respect to specifications, engine and performance.

The front fascia of the Ertiga looks similar to that of the Swift, apart from some minimal changes like the swept-back headlamps. There are fog lamps both in front and rear. The rear off the car has an angular shape and design, similar to that of Jazz. The exterior features also include body colored bumpers, outside door handles, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and chrome finished front grille.
The wheel base is of 2740mm.

The new Ertiga has a lighter and a more rigid chassis now. The car is based on the HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the Swift. So, despite being much larger than the older car, it is 20 kilos lighter. This not only improves performance but fuel-efficiency as well.

The ease with which you can get in and out of the car is another factor to be considered in buying the Ertiga. Now, because the Ertiga is based on a monocoque chassis, the rear seat is placed at an ideal height. So, getting in and out of the car is easy. Also, the big rear-door opening makes it easy to get into the third row.

And, while getting into the third row is a problem in most of the MPVs, in the Ertiga, this isn’t a problem because of the one-touch fold-and-slide option. It’s just so easy.

The Ertiga features dual tone and plush interior design. The dashboard is sleek with ergonomically designed buttons. The fabric upholstery is also good. The interior features include glove box, steering mounted audio controls, foldable 2nd and 3rd row seats, ample of head/leg/shoulder room in the first 2 rows but the 3rd row is more of a squeeze. It also features a new instrument cluster with LED display, AC vents and power socket in the second row.

The Ertiga has got comfortable seats, be it the first, second or third-rows. But the third-row is the real highlight. In most other MPVs, the third-row seating is really low, but that’s not the case in the Ertiga. You sit at a good height, and despite that, the headroom is good and even the width is good enough for two people.

The Ertiga comes with two fuel options ? petrol and diesel ? the petrol engine is a 1.4L K-series motor which produces 95Ps of maximum power and a peak torque of 130Nm, and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission gearbox. As per ARAI the MT offers a mileage of 17.50kmpl and the AT provides 17.03kmpl of mileage. On the other hand, the diesel variant comes equipped with the 1.3L DDiS200 engine that churns out 91Ps of maximum power and a peak torque of 200Nm, and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, offering a mileage of 24.52kmpl.
The ride quality is also improved with MacPherson strut suspension in the front and torsion beam coil suspension in the rear.
The vehicle’s ground clearance is of 185mm.

One factor that’s hard to disregard while buying the Ertiga is its engine options, which are quite ordinary. Sure, the petrol powertrain has good low-end torque, which makes it easy to drive in the city. But out on the highway, it feels out of breath.

Then, there’s the automatic gearbox option, which has just four-speeds, and in the world of CVTs and dual-clutch automatics, it just doesn’t cut it. There’s also the diesel one, which, to be honest, is showing its age. It’s noisy. Yes, it’s got the punch, but it’s also got a lot of lag, which makes it difficult to drive in the city.

The safety features include ABS with EBD, body structure is made out of high tensile steel, rear parking sensors, and dual SRS front airbags.

The Ertiga achieved three stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. The Ertiga offers two frontal airbags as standard. Its structure was rated as a borderline unstable performance which can and should be improved. Its footwell area was rated as unstable and pedals displacement showed risks to the lower legs of the driver. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection for passenger was good and driver chest received marginal protection. The passenger pretensioner failed to work properly. Child occupant protection showed poor results for the 18 month old dummy with the CRS installed forward facing while global best practice indicates a rearward facing position offers better protection for this age group. The Ertiga offers standard ISOFIX anchorages. Overall, the Ertiga achieved three stars for child occupant protection. The Ertiga offers standard two Seat Belt Reminders (SBR) in the front seats. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 point belts for all occupants.

The Ertiga is a perfect buy for a pleasant city drive, it already comes loaded with features and safety features like airbags and ABS with EBD come as standard.

The reason why you should definitely consider buying the Ertiga is value-for-money. The Ertiga is around Rs 3-4 lakhs cheaper than its closest rival, the Mahindra Marazzo. Now, even if Maruti is charging less for the car, it’s not like they have skimped on the equipment. It has features like a touchscreen infotainment system, rear AC, automatic climate control, ABS with EBS, dual air-bags, and ISOFIX rear seats among others.

Things to keep in mind before Buying Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.

A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.

In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
