MAHINDRA SCORPIO

INTRODUCTION

Mahindra Scorpio has been one of the most successful models in the company’s lineup and is considered as a sales mainstay, at least in the seven-seater SUV segment. In fact, having such a reputation has prompted the company to keep updating the SUV quite regularly.

Considering the Mahindra Scorpio price in India, it is one of the most fitting alternatives to the Tata Hexa. The SUV is very competitively priced and turns out to a very good value for money car. Visually, the new Mahindra Scorpio 2017 is a treat to watch and has every bit of those aesthetic cues that make it look bold and muscular.
Getting inside the Mahindra SUV is a delight and the company has taken good care by providing the most suitable features that buyers look for at that price range. The SUV is available in a total of six trim grades with three engine tuning versions. It is also offered in 2WD (two-wheel drive) and 4WD (four wheel drive) options, thereby proving the SUV’s off-road prowess.

EXTERIOR

Exterior

The Mahindra Scorpio is one of the most muscular cars in the SUV segment at the price range. The front section gets a very attractive look with an edgy bumper portion. In fact, the lower bumper and the air dams almost cover the presence of the skid plate. The grille gets a mesh design with a seven-chambered cover. The front wheel arches are big but the rear ones are softer. However, the body is devoid of much black cladding along the lower skirt.
The Mahindra Scorpio top model rides on thick 235 section 17-inch wheels while the lower variants get 15-inch wheels with 215 section tyres. The top-spec models also get projector headlamps and fog lamps.

INTERIOR

Interior

The SUV is extremely relevant to the current market situations and made to give a tough competition to its competitions. The key highlight of the Mahindra Scorpio interior is that it is given bench seat for the third row as well, along with a centre armrest. The seats are wrapped in faux leather upholstery, making the car cabin a better place than most of the cars with fabric upholstery.
The front dash section imparts pretty much of attractions as well. The centrally mounted 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system gets GPS satellite navigation. Barring the touch screen unit, the other systems on the dash get analogue dials along with a digital clock. The settings on the centre console are clean with good quality knobs and button bits. The top-end spec also gets automatic climate control along with a heater. There are two 12V power outlets as well.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE

Engine & Transmission

The Mahindra Scorpio is available in a total of six variants with three engine trims. The base model gets a completely different engine, which is an m2DICR diesel engine making just a meagre 75 bhp power at 3,200 revs per minute and a maximum torque of 200 Nm at 1,400 revs per minute. The 2.2-litre tried-and-tested mHawk diesel engine is also added in the S5 and S7 grades, which produces a highest power of 120 bhp at 4,000 revs per minute along with a peak torque of 280 Nm at 1,800 revs per minute.
However, the range-topping S11 grades are powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk engine but with a new tuning that enables the engine to produce a maximum power of 140 bhp at 3,750 revolutions per minute along with a peak torque of 320 Nm at 1,500 revs per minute. The lower S3, S5 and S7 come with just the 2WD option, while the S11 is available in both 2WD as well as 4WD trims. There is a standard 5-speed manual transmission unit available in all the variants barring the 140 bhp S7 which gets a 6-speed unit. Mahindra Scorpio automatic is not offered as of now.

BRAKING, HANDLING, SAFETY , COMFORT

Performance and Handling

The Mahindra Scorpio is slowly turning out to be a beast in the affordable 7-seater SUV segment. It has a powerful engine working under the hood and if you are choosing the 140 bhp version, you can be assured that your car can pin down any SUV or MPV of the same price bracket while on the road. However, the base 75 bhp models seem to be a little dated in terms of the power. Being such a big car, it is smaller in power than many hatchbacks and the lack of enough power at your disposal will hurt your ride to some extent.
Apart from that, the ride quality of the car is extremely good. The interior seating is comfortable and the annoying engine noise has been brought down considerably. The gear shifting is smooth and the acceleration is delightful too.

Braking and Safety

The Mahindra Scorpio is pretty healthy in terms of braking and safety, except the base model. The top-end Mahindra Scorpio car has dual safety airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and seat belt warning. ABS, along with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) is also given in the top model. However, child safety lock and vehicle immobilizer are added as standard across all the variants.

 Mileage

The Mahindra Scorpio offers a very impressive mileage which is one of the bests in the segment. With a fuel metre reading as 15.4 kmpl (ARAI certified), the SUV is definitely one of the most fuel-efficient big-sized SUVs in the market. The mileage figure is very much at par with the Mahindra Bolero, its own sibling.

PRACTICALITY

PRACTICALITY

fuel tank capacity of 60 liters

The powerful SUV, Mahindra Scorpio, is available with a large fuel tank capacity of 60 litres out of which 10 litres is for reserve. This large fuel storage capability ensures that this SUV can go on long drives on a single fuel re-fill. Nissan Terrano, is a recently launched stylish SUV that hosts a smaller fuel tank capacity when compared to Mahindra Scorpio at just 50 litres. Nissan Terrano also has a smaller fuel tank that can accommodate just 50 litres of fuel, taking this vehicle far behind when compared to Mhaindra Scorpio.

But Force Gurkha comes with a slightly larger fuel storage capacity of 63 litres and beats Mhaindra Scorpio by a very small margin. The hugely popular SUV, Tata Safari also offers a fairly large fuel tank capacity of 55 litres. Another Mahindra offering, Bolero also comes with a similar fuel tank capacity of 60 litres.

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

With the introduction of the Mahindra Scorpio facelift, the company has managed to maintain its hold on the craze that has been existent for a long time. The SUV is powerful at heart and the same is complemented by the exterior design as well. Mahindra Scorpio on road price is equivalent to many crossover and 5-seater SUVs, which gives the Scorpio an edge over them.
The SUV has been doing well since its launch, along with the Bolero, and the subsequent launches of the XUV500 or the TUV300 have not dented the sales in any sense. The popularity and preference of the car over the other 7-seaters are clearly visible in its sales figures. Buying a new Mahindra Scorpio means you are investing in a car that will pay you back with its immense mileage, attractive designing and a powerful heart under the bonnet. However, the base S3 model has an old engine fitted, which would feel incompetent compared to other cars in the segment.

Things to keep in mind before Buying Mahindra Scorpio

When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.

A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.

In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.

The Scorpio is a brand in itself and has done wonders for Mahindra. Its combination of rugged appeal, robust build and strong diesel engine appeals to many. However, it has now started to feel old, especially the design which has been in existence for almost 15 years.
