HYUNDAI TUCSON

INTRODUCTION

Hyundai Tucson has marked its re-entry in the Indian market, albeit in an all-new avatar, and with a lot more bells and whistles. The South-Korean automaker, after years of deliberation, has brought back the SUV to bridge the gap between Creta and Santa Fe. The all-new Hyundai Tucson SUV is available in both the petrol and diesel fuel trims with a total of five variants: MT, AT GL, MT, AT GL and AT GLS. The exterior styling cues have been taken from the Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 Design Philosophy, just like Elantra and Creta. Several Hyundai Tucson features are first in the segment, while being presented with manual as well as automatic transmissions in both the gasoline and diesel guises. It also came to light that the AWD variant would, in all likelihood, be introduced by April 2017 in the country.

EXTERIOR

EXTERIOR

The all-new Hyundai Tucson exterior carries forward Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 Design Philosophy with utmost elegance and charm. The front fascia flaunts the bold Hyundai signature hexagonal front grille, flanked by the first-in-segment dual barrel LED headlamps. There is a wing-shaped horizontal bar at the front bumper, along with the LED daytime running lights, which take the styling quotient to a whole new level. The rear end boasts of a sleek LED tail-lamp cluster and twin chrome exhaust pipes.

INTERIOR

Interior

The Hyundai Tucson interior features a well-organized horizontal dashboard and premium leather seats, and silver detailing has been used on the center fascia with soft touch crash pad. The all-new Hyundai Tucson specifications include first-in-segment hands-free smart power tailgate with height adjustment, electric parking brake, dual-zone FATC with cluster ionizer, 10-way adjustable power driver seat, welcome function, auto folding ORVMs with heated function, compass on ECM, tilt and telescopic steering, auto headlamps with escort function, smart key and push button start, auto defogger, 4+2 speaker entertainment system, glove box cooling, luggage screen, rear seat armrest with cup holder, rear AC vents, 60:40 split rear seat with reclining function, and many more.

For those asking, the 8-inch HD touchscreen Audio/Video/Navigation (AVN) system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice recognition is a standard feature across the entire variant line-up.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE

Engine & Transmission

The Hyundai Tucson comes with two engines: a 2.0 L 4-cylinder Nu Dual VTVT petrol and a 2.0 L 4-cylinder R e-VGT diesel. The former develops the maximum power of 152 bhp at 6200 rpm and peak torque of 192 Nm at 4000 rpm, while the latter belts out a thumping 182 bhp at 4000 rpm and 400 Nm between 1750-2750 rpm. Both the engines are offered with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions. The automatic variants also get the new Drive Mode Select feature to choose among Normal, Eco and Sport modes.

BRAKING, HANDLING, SAFETY , COMFORT

Braking and Safety

Hyundai Tucson has received the highest 5-star safety rating from the EURO NCAP in 2015, and it won the Top Safety Pick+ Award 2016 in the USA from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). As for the safety features, it comes with 6 airbags, ESP with VSM, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), first-in-segment Downhill Brake Control (DBC), ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera, height-adjustable front seatbelts, speed-sensing auto door lock, impact-sensing auto door unlock, 3-point ELR seatbelt, etc., to name a few.

Performance and Handling

The diesel mill of Hyundai Tucson is pretty refined and smooth, though it lacks a bit of power that the driver vouch for during mid revs. The petrol engine also works decently and the gear ratios are well balanced. It sails effortlessly on the highways and with the fairly-responsive steering wheel, handling is at par with the competitors.

Mileage

Hyundai Tucson mileage is quite decent in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol manual and automatic variants deliver an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 13.03 kmpl and 12.95 kmpl, respectively, while the diesel counterparts return 18.42 kmpl and 16.38 kmpl, respectively.

PRACTICALITY

PRACTICALITY

Crossover SUVs need to be good in this respect in order to prove their worth over a standard family hatchback. The Tucson does this with ease, as it’s very spacious for adult passengers inside. Rear occupants are treated to excellent legroom, even if the driver or front passenger has their seat pushed quite far back. The doors open nice and wide, so access to both the front and rear of the interior is easy.

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

Hyundai Tucson has been introduced with the sole purpose of bridging the gap between Creta and Santa Fe. However, the Hyundai Tucson price is on the higher side, as we expected it to start from Rs. 15 Lakh and go as high as Rs. 21 Lakh. Hence, it would be surprising if Hyundai is able to find the desired number of buyers in the Indian market. Fingers crossed, though!

Things to keep in mind before Buying Hyundai Tucson

When buying a new car in general one must look for things like body panels that are out of line, or load bearing beams that seem to have been damaged. The next thing to check whether the paint is original or it has been repainted, a quick check under concealed plastic panels is a great way to check for unmatched paint. Another thing to check for is underbody rust in humid or sea adjacent areas.

A good way to check if the car has been rear-ended is by checking the boot. Flip open the spare wheel cover and remove the wheel completely. If the car was repaired after an accident the floor will have visible signs as the surface wouldn’t be smooth as it would in an undamaged car.

In the end, always remember to check for complete documentation including service records. Also, do check with the insurance company for any past claims, which will make you aware of the accidents the car has been involved in. Last but not the least, get the car checked from a trusted workshop before closing the deal.
