After seeing the specification both the cars look more or less like twins. Infact, they are indeed. In many ways, Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz are familiar. But keep reading to find which is the best for you!
Tata Altroz
Let’s talk about Altroz first. It is a 1.2 L three-cylinder petrol engine. The engine is borrowed from Nexon. The engine makes 109 bhp and torque of 140 Nm. When it comes to torque, you feel that it may be short compared to other hatchbacks like i20 which offers 172 Nm or Polo which offers 175 Nm with 1 litre engine. The turbocharge engine doesn’t seem adequate.
But however, this is negated by the driving experience you get. Even with such low torque it is still neatly controllable. It reaches 0-100kmph in a matter of 12 seconds. Note that this is a very decent acceleration. When it comes to power it is almost there for the buck. Even in terms of mileage it offers over 18 kmpl.
Things that could’ve been better is gear shift and reduce in stiffness of the brakes. The gear and brake was something that was expected to be better but remained unchanged.
Coming to other features, it is loaded with dozen of them. It is ergonomically very spacious and well built. One feature we liked is the Xpress Cool which changes the cabin temperature very quickly. You also get auto wipers and headlamps. But car key is however not remote. That feels little strange.
Hyundai i20

Hyundai was the one which the started the i-series economy hatchback segment 10 years ago. Now with i20 it is going forward with the same enthusiasm.
The 1.5 l engine produces torque of 240 Nm. It is still available only in manual variant. Now, there is slight lag incase of excess power. but, the car delivers mid range speeds in a comfortable manner. Cruising highways with over 100 kpmh will not be a problem we guess. In terms of efficiency it delivers 25 kmpl or above. At slower speeds it is quite tight to ride on. i20’s vulnerability may be exposed in a slow moving traffic. It doesn’t really tackle those slow speed variations like it should. Coming to the interiors, it has borrowed the instrument clutter from Verna. There is wireless charging and 311 liters space in the boot. But the quality of interiors is lower than from the outside. The materials used are unabashedly cheap.
In terms of safety, it does exceedingly well. It has 6 airbags, ABD with EBD and ESC, hill assitant, height adjustable front seats and speed sensing door locks.
VERDICT: Both cars look have more or less the same features. Altroz gives great interiors and comfort but at the expense of less smooth gear and traverse. Starts getting stiff at high speeds. Whereas i20 does it well in terms of highway cruises but at slow speeds it jitters around. The interior can definitely could’ve been better for the price tag.
Choose Altroz if you are good within city limits. If you want to travel out regularly then you i20 shall be your comapnion provided you can hang in or accentuate the interiors.
